Chapter Twenty-Two

STACEY

The movers arrived at eight o’clock sharp. I’d packed two bags. One held everything I’d need for the next couple of days and the other held all my lingerie. I just couldn’t allow those men to pack my personal items.

They started in the kitchen and with lightning speed, it was boxed, labeled, and loaded in the truck. Next the living room, which really was about the furniture. They disassembled what they could and loaded it up. Then came the bedrooms. The two guest rooms were simple. They held furniture only and a few things in the closets. Then they got to my bedroom. I had stripped the bedding off all the beds earlier, so they took out the mattress and box springs. Next went my furniture and lastly, the items in the closet. They hung all the clothes in hanging boxes, which was pretty cool.

The bathrooms and linen closets were a simple matter of packing up.

They loaded everything and finally came the washer and dryer. The new condo had all the other appliances so mine would stay here. The place had an underground garage for residents, and I wouldn’t need any lawn equipment, so all that would stay as well.

It was midday when they were done, and we were off for the second part of the move. That part seemed to go quicker than the first. By five, everything was unpacked, and I was putting the final touches on things. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to hang pictures yet or wait to see if I sold my house. What if I ended up here for only a few months?

Stanton had called during the day to check on things and when the movers left, I called him to let him know.

“They were amazing. Wait until you see this place.”

“I’m going to pick up dinner and I’ll be there in an hour and a half. Is that good?”

“Perfect. Thanks.”

His punctuality was mind-blowing. He was always here exactly when he said he would. He walked around and let out a whistle. “I love this place.”

“So do I. I can’t wait to spend a few nights here.”

“Have you ever thought of buying a condo? More security and less yard work?”

“No, but after this, I might be considering that option.”

He set out dinner, pulling it from the bags he’d carried inside. It was Italian, and I’d smelled it when he walked in.

“Where are your plates?”

I sent him to the proper cabinet. “Silverware is in there,” I added, pointing to a drawer. He placed everything on the counter, and we ate there, seated on the stools I’d brought from my house.

“I hope my house lists okay without any furniture,” I said, then dove into my pasta dinner. “Mmm, this is delicious.”

“One of my favorite Italian places. I hope you like Alfredo. This one reminds me of Italy.”

I knocked his arm. “Shut up. I don’t want Italy mentioned while I’m eating Italian food.”

He barked out a laugh. “That makes no sense.”

“Yeah, it does, because it makes me want to go there.
